  1. And they were nightshade violets,
    dream-rolling into bloom, irises their
eyes wide in the dark as star lilies,
the whoosh of their passing, night train
    flowers of the moonlight express

    1. The foliage of the night… I really like irises. There’s a white flower that only blooms at night too –
“The beautiful, white flowers only open at night. The pleasant smell of these flowers last til the morning. The next morning after blooming the the night blooming cereus will flowers closes forever.” That wasn’t the one I was thinking of … But it will do. I believe I was thinking of ‘moon flowers’.

    lonely whistle of
the night train chugging to dawn
    where sparrows call spring…

    they twitter in circles at
    winter feeders seeking bugs

    woken by silence
the hobo knows the train’s stopped
    exits, hails a cab

    as if still dreaming; returns
to the place he lied, grieving

    coming full circle
to the place where he lost both
    best friend and lover

    changing his name, aging too
these things did not ease his guilt…
