Twiglet #200

A twiglet’s aim is to “prompt” a thought. If something comes to mind, write. A polished piece isn’t the goal; creativity is. Leave a link, if you’d like your work read, but comments should not be expected.

  1. There was a ledge on the brick chimney.
What it was intended for, I do not know.
There are other questions: If I knew who
to ask, there would still be no way
to express the chasms born within me.
How do I know what is frightening?
What song would a deaf mockingbird sing?
Can we recognize love without mimicry?
A tornado brushed past in nineteen twenty
and the young bricks fell as if taut strings
kept them aligned. Did it seem strange
    to the bricklayers planning re-assembly?
I set a long, thin green plastic planter of pansies
on the ledge. They died, providing no answers.

    1. …”ledge on the brick chimney” – for defusing rainwater, thereby protecting the mortar and pointing. At least that’s the purpose here on old houses. As for the poem – love the narrative stream of consciousness in this.

      1. Hmmm. That makes sense, but–as I couldn’t figure out a way to say it in the poem–this is low. About level with the crest of the fireplace, and about equal to its breadth. I thought it might have something to do with that. But if you don’t have huge foundation plantings it makes a nice rest for a flower box.
