What is a crane but folded paper?
There is a blade of grass on the bathroom floor.
Why it is still there is for another day, but
its stem end half has been bruised and wrinkled
while the rest bows and then tapers like a wing
To me, it looks like a black brush-drawn crane
or heron standing at rest on the tan faux stone

This is really lovely. Actually, it’s almost brilliant. It’s like sitting on the loo and contemplating the why-fors of your bent little toe. I mean that as a compliment, by the way.

Like imagining what the cracks in the ceiling could be…
only some bit of nature brought in by one’s shoe.
Whenever I read crane or heron I think of those that pass by my bit of creek. For the first time in years I actually saw two heron (possibly a pair) last week.
I like your imagination.

I had never thought about that, Jules. I’ve never seen a pair. Wow.

I’ve been told heron mate for life. But I guess they’d have to find a mate first. 🙂

Second Grade Affairs
Susie passed a note to me
said, give this to Robert
Warily watching the teacher
I casually unfolded the paper
“I love you.
Do you love me
Yes or No?”
Refolding, I quickly passed
it to Robert
with a heavy heart.
I loved him, too.
